The "San Juans" is a term applied to a chain comprised of hundreds of small islands almost half of which are submerged at high tide. The most popular islands are San Juan Island (and its busy port at Friday Harbor), Orcas Island (Rosario), Lopez & Shaw. Four separate ferry systems serve the San Juan Islands. From Seattle, Bellingham, Port Angeles and Port Townsend there are seasonal passenger ferries to Friday Harbor. From Anacortes, year-round vehicle/passenger ferry service to and between between Friday Harbor, Orcas, Shaw and Lopez is provided by Washington State Ferries. The San Juan Islands are a very popular destination so it is essential to book lodging well in advance (see suggestions at right) if planning to spend time on the islands.
